Understanding Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a condition in which you sweat more than you physiologically need to regulate your temperature. You can find yourself sweating at odd moments, like when it’s cold, when you’re at rest, or at other random times.

Your sweat glands release sweat — an odorless liquid meant to keep you from overheating. You have these sweat glands in your skin, and they release sweat via ducts. Once the sweat reaches the surface of your skin, it transforms from a fluid to a gas, evaporating and leaving you feeling cooler.

When your sweat glands overwork, you have hyperhidrosis.

Primary vs. Secondary Hyperhidrosis

Two main types of hyperhidrosis exist: primary and secondary.

Primary hyperhidrosis is a chronic skin condition caused by a genetic mutation — meaning you can inherit it from your family. It’s also the most common type of hyperhidrosis. It can affect your:

  • Hands
  • Feet
  • Face
  • Armpits

For most people, primary hyperhidrosis begins before the age of 25.

Secondary hyperhidrosis is a condition that’s caused by another illness or as a side effect of medication. Diabetes and Parkinson’s disease are two conditions that can cause secondary hyperhidrosis, though there are others. With this type of hyperhidrosis, you may find yourself sweating even while sleeping.

One concern affecting your daily life that we can help with is hyperhidrosis. Take a look at what exactly hyperhidrosis is and how BWA Aesthetics can improve this condition.

The Treatment Experience at BWA Aesthetics

Here is what you can expect when you turn to the knowledgeable team at BWA Aesthetics for your hyperhidrosis treatments.

We always have a consultation with our clients before offering services of any type. This consultation allows us to ask questions about your medical history as well as your goals so that we can put together an individualized treatment plan.

We will determine the best hyperhidrosis options for your exact needs.

Consultation

The procedure is simple if we think you’d benefit most from Botox. We will apply a topical anesthetic if needed and then clean the treatment area. We can then administer the injections.

Make sure to avoid wearing makeup or lotions when you come to the treatment session. The number of injections will depend on the size of the treatment area.

If we recommend Miradry treatment, we will ask you not to wear antiperspirants or deodorants on the day of the procedure. You should also wear an outfit that allows us easy access to your armpits. We will inject a local anesthetic to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure.

Once the area is numb, we will pass the Miradry device over the armpit, letting radiofrequency affect the sweat glands. The process can take about an hour.

If we recommend topical solutions, like antiperspirants, we can tell you a bit about what they do and how to apply them.

Procedure

After Botox injections, we recommend that you don’t scratch, massage, or rub the treatment sites and that you avoid taking blood thinners for a few more days. You can expect to start seeing results in three to four days, but it can take up to two weeks for Botox to fully effect. You’ll need to repeat the treatment every four to six months.

If Miradry is the right choice, you want to have some cold compresses around as you recover — although there’s not much downtime to worry about. However, you want to avoid strenuous activity for the first day or so. You may need two treatment sessions.

Most antiperspirants and topical creams can take a few days to work, but we can advise you on what to expect depending on the type of product we recommend.

Recovery and Results

Available Hyperhidrosis Treatments

At BWA Aesthetics, we have a few different treatment options for excessive sweating available.

Botox injections for sweat reduction.

You may know Botox injections for their wrinkle-diminishing abilities, but they can target the cause of primary hyperhidrosis as well.

Botox is made from botulinum toxin, which is a neuromodulator. It temporarily interrupts the signals your brain sends to your muscles, telling them to contract — which is also how it can help with hyperhidrosis.

Injecting Botox into a nerve can stop sweat production in that area for up to a few months at a time. You’ll need to repeat the treatment every four to six months to continue benefiting from the results, but it is a highly effective option.

Typically, it can take a few days to start seeing results with Botox injections.

Miradry: Non-invasive microwave technology for sweat and odor reduction.

Miradry is an FDA-approved treatment for excessive sweating under the arms. It delivers controlled electromagnetic energy to the sweat glands in the area, starting a process called thermolysis that dissolves the sweat glands.

Miradry’s advanced technology relies on a device that uses a cooling tip to keep you comfortable as the procedure takes place. It’s such an effective treatment that the treated sweat glands will likely not grow back.

Within two sessions, you can consider the treatment permanent. And not only does Miradry get rid of the sweat glands, but it can also reduce underarm hair and odor.

Prescription antiperspirants and topical solutions.

Many of our clients can benefit from prescription topical solutions and antiperspirants.

Antiperspirants with aluminum chloride are particularly useful. You have to apply them to dry skin before bed and wash them off when you wake up. It’s important to avoid getting any of it into your eyes.

After using it daily for a few days, you can start using it just a couple of times a week to maintain your results. These types of antiperspirants function by causing obstructions in sweat gland ducts and the destruction of secretory cells.

The topical solutions available can include creams that contain glycopyrrolate and can help clients who have excessive sweating in the face or hands. How effective the topical solutions are can depend on various factors, including how often you apply them.
